Ghost Town of Independence

July 26, 2019

Led by Nina Gabianelli, Aspen Historical Society
With the help of the Aspen Historical Society, we will explore the ghost town of Independence—the first mining site in the Roaring Fork Valley. In the early 1880s, it was home to 1,500 miners, 40 businesses, three post offices, and a rich gold lode. However, it quickly went bust after its boom. Today, the ghost town is on National Register of Historic Places. This tour involves moderate to difficult ½ mile hike at 10,900 feet elevation. Afterwards, we will also get a chance to explore historic downtown Aspen.
